Le lundi 26 mars, 49 élèves de premières S et L du Lycée Fernand Darchicourt ont eu l’opportunité d’assister à une représentation théâtrale en anglais, organisée par la troupe “le théâtre en anglais”. L’occasion pour eux d’exercer leur compréhension de cette langue dans un cadre différent des cours.

La pièce, intitulée Prisoner 46664, revient sur la vie du célèbre leader et symbole du mouvement anti-apartheid en Afrique du Sud, Nelson Mandela. À travers un flashback, les élèves ont pu découvrir le combat de cet homme, de son enfance, avec son entrée à l’école où il devra prendre le nom de Nelson, à son décès en 2013, en passant par son long séjour en prison, et son élection significative à la tête du pays, en tant que premier président noir.

Sur scène apparaissent de nombreux personnages, joués par seulement cinq talentueux comédiens, venant des quatre coins du monde : du Zimbabwe, de Nouvelle-Zélande, des États-Unis, du Congo et du Cameroun. Les points forts de la mise en scène sont la musique et l’utilisation habile d’un écran sur la scène. En effet, entre chaque scène les comédiens chantent, ce qui apporte un rythme et ne laisse pas la place à des temps morts.

À la fin de la représentation les élèves ont eu la chance d’échanger avec la troupe. Ils ont alors appris qu’il s’agissait de la première collaboration de ces comédiens, qui s’étaient rencontrés lors des répétitions, six semaines avant le début de leur tournée. Les comédiens ont ajouté que même après 85 représentations, ils prenaient toujours autant de plaisir à jouer. Cette pièce à la fois divertissante et touchante a été très bien accueillie par les élèves, transportés en Afrique du Sud pendant quatre-vingt-dix minutes.

Some 11th grade students at Lille’s Sebastopol Theatre

On Monday, March the 26th, forty-nine 11th grade students (“Première S and L”) had the opportunity to attend a theatrical performance in English. A chance for them to practise their understanding of this language in a setting different from classrooms.

The play, entitled Prisoner 46664, revisits the life of the famous leader and symbol of the South African anti-apartheid movement, Nelson Mandela.

Through a flashback, the students have been able to discover this man’s battle, from his childhood when he had to take the name “Nelson”, to his passing in 2013, going through his long stay in prison, and his symbolic election at the head of the country, as the first black president.

On stage, there are many characters, played by only five talented actors, coming from all around the world : from Zimbabwe, New Zealand, the United States, Congo and Cameroon.

The strong points of the staging are the music and the clever use of a screen on stage. Indeed, between each scene, the actors sing, which gives a rhythm and no time out.

At the end of the show, the students were lucky enough to share a moment with the troupe. They learnt this was these actors’ first collaboration, who met during the rehearsals, six weeks before going on tour. The actors added that even after eighty-five shows, it was still a pleasure for them to play.

This play, both entertaining and touching, was well received by the students, transported to South Africa for ninety minutes.
